The Demographics of Binge Drinking

Binge drinking behaviors occur across all racial and gender lines, and alcohol dependent individuals of all ages tend to have engaged in consumption that qualifies as “binge drinking” by research standards. Here are a few statistics on the demographics of binge drinking behaviors among drinkers in the United States.

• Geographic Demographics of Binge Drinking
  • Wisconsin leads the rest of the country in frequency of binge drinking, with nearly 22 percent of residents engaging in binge drinking behaviors. North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Rhode Island citizens engaged in binge drinking almost as frequently, with 18 to 20 percent of their population excessively consuming alcohol at binge drinking levels.
  • The lowest occurrence of binge drinking occurs in Tennessee. States with the lowest levels of binge drinking include West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Utah, amounting to roughly 9 percent of their population.
• Age Demographics in Binge Drinking
  • Nearly 14 percent of the pre-teen and teenage population, ages 10 to 19, engage in binge drinking, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
  • Among those under 21 years of age, 90 percent of alcohol consumption in the country occurred during binge drinking episodes.
  • On college campuses, at least 86 percent of students drink regularly, causing binge drinking to become established as the primary health hazard for those attending institutes of higher learning.
  • Of all age ranges in the United States, 18 to 20 year olds have the highest ratio of binge drinkers—with over half of young adults in the age range engaging in binge drinking.
  • Among adults with excessive alcohol intake, nearly 92 percent have engaged in binge drinking within the last month.
  • While college students receive a reputation for binge drinking, 7 out of 10 binge drinking episodes involve adults above college age, who are 26 years or older.
  • Over three-quarters of the alcohol imbibed by adults in the United States is consumed during episodes of binge drinking.
• Gender Demographics in Binge Drinking
  • Women under 30 have experienced a rise of binge drinking episodes in the last three decades—increasing by a whopping 10 percent. Interestingly enough, the rates of binge drinking have declined for most other demographics.
  • Men tend to engage in binge drinking behaviors twice as often as women do.
